Children can enjoy hands-on, educational fun through our Micro Masters program. Designed by Andrea, a UC Davis-trained Master Beekeeper with over a decade of child development experience, this science-based program is perfect for elementary-aged students, eager to learn about honey bees and the vital role they play in our ecosystem. Whether in schools, homeschool groups, or earning a bee badge in Scouts, this engaging program brings the buzz of the hive right to your students.
Andrea is an approved STEAM educator for San Diego Unified School District.
Program Highlights:
Take-Home Crafts: Build wildflower terrariums or start pollinator journals to keep the learning going at home.
Observation Hive: Safely view the stars of the show through a secure plexiglass enclosure. (dependant on weather)
Honey Tasting: Taste local honey from San Diego while learning about its production.
Interactive Stations: Explore bee vision glasses, magnetic dancing bees, anatomy models, and much more.
Suit up: Kids can put on a beekeeper’s suit and explore tools of the trade.
What to Expect
-
Due to the seasonal nature of beekeeping, The Micro Masters Program is available late April - July.
-
The bees come to you. Andrea travels to schools, bringing educational materials, activities, and live bees in a secure observation hive (dependant on weather and season)
-
The curriculum was designed for second-grade students studying pollination, but can be adapted for kindergarten through Fifth grade.
-
The duration of the program is an hour. After an introduction and story, students separate into groups and rotate through different learning centers. Each classroom is presented to individually.
-
Each child creates a pollinator journal or a wildflower terrarium, reinforcing learning beyond the classroom. The Teacher or host chooses the activity prior to the day of presentation.
-
The host choses a stationary location for the presentation to take place. This location should have a minimum of 4 standard size tables available. If booking multiple classes, each classroom will be presented to individually in this area. Classes of 20 or more students can not be combined.
